Easel Bullet Points

Village of Saltaire

July 17, 2010 Meeting

Security building was the first building constructed in Saltaire – has historic value.

Is there a need for security to be located on Bay Prom?

Size of proposed civic building is too large. No need for large meeting space.

Village will be unable to tap identified grant funding sources.

More economic data for store should be provided.  Acquisition cost?

Zoning Controls?  Is existing zoning adequate to protect from unwanted uses (e.g., Surf’s Out)?

Unique character.  Doesn’t want to be Hamptons.

No need for signage, bathrooms.  Don’t want to attract daytrippers.

No existing activity at the Post Office.  People gather near Market.

Community library – not expressly for children.  Library alcove has an existing magical quality.  Doesn’t wan to lose that in a larger space or be sacrificed to Village Hall needs.

Undeveloped character of the Village is desirable.

Willing to have no market.  No subsidy from Village.

Maintain open space – no bocce, etc.

Doesn’t want to be so averse to visitors – should be welcoming place.

Don’t want to facilitate daytrippers.  Signage, restrooms would encourage.

Prefers low-key nature of village.

Keep plan focus on store.  Its loss would diminish value.

Successful market in adjacent community.

Saltaire Yacht Club coordinates with the Village to provide services.  Should integrate needs of Village and SYC.

Does Village Board have right to get involved in private transaction/operation?

DEC and DOH concerns could hamper business opportunity and transaction.

Physical condition of market comparable to other markets on Fire Island.  Problem is that residents are not shopping there.

Prefer minimalist approach.  Don’t want to provide services that would attract daytrippers.

Market prices and quality are problems.  People have found alternatives.

Need understanding of revenues/valuation in order for to maket decision.

Keep focus on store.  Village needs to decide if we want a store, and if so, then pay to support it.

What happens if store goes out – could other uses of concern go in?

Contrast of Fair Harbor market.  Residences attached to market could provide for revenue enhancement.

Other options re: Village involvement should supplement the three in report.

Village should not apply for grant programs.  Not appropriate – intended for blighted areas.

Village already has gathering places (e.g., Churches, SYC).

Improvement/Change

Possible safety issue at Bay Prom/Broadway – plantings, benches would impede travelway, attract deer.

Why is Village involved with store?– not in supermarket business.

No need to rebuild community – love as is.

Would like the financial numbers to be made widely available.

Concern over short-term rentals.

Village’s priority concerns should be boardwalk conditions, beach replenishment.

Would not have purchased home in Saltaire if no market.  Market is necessary asset.

Need to welcome, in a limited or understated way.

Don’t want restaurant with liquor license.  That would encourage daytrippers

Concern over usage of “downtown” term

Focus on store.  Don’t need rest of plan.

Village should have some welcoming.
