To:    All Saltaire Homeowners

All homes in Saltaire where propane is used or stored must annually file a permit application in order to be granted a permit to use and store the tanks. Click here to download your 2008 Combined Application for Propane Permit & Outdoor Cooking Permit.

Propane Tanks

All propane tanks of a capacity greater than 10 lbs may only be present in the Village pursuant to a properly issued Flammable Gas Tank Permit.  This permit requirement shall hereafter include the large 80 lb big blue propane tanks used by many homes for cooking and other interior gas needs.  The main purpose of this requirement for a permit for the large tanks as well as the smaller tanks is to allow the Village to provide this important information to the Fire Company. Information on the size and type of propane tanks located on a property may be vital to the Fire Company in the event that they respond in an emergency.  You will notice in the enclosed application that there is no fee associated with the permit for the large blue tanks.

Mosquito Control Devices

A permit is required for the use and storage of a mosquito control device.  The fee is $50 per residence, and a maximum of 3 units are allowed per property. The maximum number of tanks allowed for mosquito units is equal to the number of units plus one.

Outdoor Cooking

The legislation permits outdoor cooking under certain conditions and only by use of a propane gas powered grill. The regulations governing the use of an outdoor grill are very specific; and it is extremely important that all applicants and users of the grill understand these conditions. The entire section of the law relating to outdoor cooking is appended to the reverse side of the permit application. Please read it thoroughly, and call me if you have any questions whatsoever regarding the conditions of grill use. I highlight some of the important provisions below:

Þ    Unless one is a year round resident, which is strictly defined, outdoor cooking is prohibited from November 1 through March 31, and all propane tanks must be removed from the Village by November 30 of each year.

Þ    Grilling is prohibited on second floor decks unless and only under the condition that there is an unobstructed exterior egress directly to the ground that is permanently affixed to the deck, or unless the gas supply to the grill is hard-connected to the propane supply for the house on the ground level.

Þ    Outdoor cooking shall be permitted only between the hours of 12:00 noon and 9:00 p.m.

Þ    The grill, barbecue or heat source when in use shall be attended at all times and located at least five (5) feet from the nearest combustible material, including but not limited to trees or hanging limb, any structure (excluding deck railings) that is not protected by fireproof material and not less than fifteen (15) feet from an inhabited structure on an adjoining property

Þ    A fire extinguisher in proper working order and a working garden hose connected to a water tap which hose shall be located within ten (10) feet of the grill, barbecue or heat source.

Þ    The grill must be at all times upon a fire retardant platform or mat extending at least one (1) foot in all directions from the heat source.  A fire retardant grill mat can be found in many home and garden stores, and will be acceptable if the material is listed as fire retardant.

Þ    Only one grill per home is allowed, and only one spare propane tank for the grill can be stored on the property. This spare tank must be stored in compliance with the Village Code.

Þ    By applying for this permit, you consent to the inspection of your property by the Village Fire Marshal or other Village representative for compliance with the Village Code.
