Mosquito Notice

Please be advised that Suffolk County Vector Control will be applying the larvaecide known as Altosid (or equivalent) via helicopter in Clam Pond Cove on Tuesdays throughout the spring and summer anytime between the hours of 8:00am and 12:00 noon.

Altosid is a mosquito growth regulator that prevents adult mosquito emergence.  It is applied in the form of pellets or liquid and prevents mosquito larvae from maturing into adult mosquitoes. Vector Control has found Altosid (or equivalent) to be the most effective mosquito growth regulator for salt marsh mosquitoes and has been applied to Clam Pond Cove in similar fashion since 1999.

FROM SUFFOLK COUNTY VECTOR CONTROL NOTICE

"The products used by Vector Control are registered by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation and are applied in accordance with the required state and federal permits. No precautions are recommended to prepare for this spraying, as the helicopter will be flying at a very low level over marsh areas and taking other precautions to control drift into inhabited areas. Human exposure from this operation is unlikely and the products involved have no significant human toxicity."

A Specimen Label of Altosid is available in the Village Office. If you have any questions about Altosid or Vectolex, the growth regulator used in the freshwater in Saltaire, please call:
